Whether you’re interested in studying abroad for a short period of time or for your entire high school and/or college career, the experiences you have while studying outside of your home country can significantly broaden your horizons, open your mind, and enhance your career prospects. For me personally, studying in both China and Germany during my college years allowed me to have experiences and learn things of which I never even dreamed. This blog outlines some of the major ways in which studying abroad can positively impact your life for the better.
Experience the World and Immerse Yourself in a New Culture
Studying abroad can help you gain new knowledge and understanding of other cultures as well as provide you with new perspectives on your own culture. In our increasingly globalized world, being an internationally minded, globally thinking citizen of the world is more important than ever before, and studying abroad can help you become that.
Attend a Prestigious University and Receive a World-Class Education
Especially true for international students studying in the United States, studying abroad can provide you with the opportunity to attend a world-renown university and have contact with professors who are experts in their fields. With a disproportionately high number of the world’s top-ranked universities, being able to study at a good university in the U.S. is a privilege for both Americans and international students alike. For American students who are looking to study abroad, many U.S. universities have strong ties and exchange programs with top universities in other countries, allowing students to take advantage of all that the top universities around the world have to offer.
Improve and Perfect Your Language Skills
Studying abroad is often not only an exercise in cultural immersion, but also language immersion. Living in the environment is often the best way to learn and maintain a language, and studying abroad provides this opportunity. As English tends to be the lingua franca of global business and international communication, studying abroad in the United States provides international students with an excellent opportunity to master the English language. For American students studying abroad, learning a language other than English can also be highly useful for a future international career and communicating with others when in foreign countries.
Enhance Your Resume
The language skills, cultural knowledge, willingness to try new things, and ability to easily adapt are all skills that you can gain from studying abroad that will be highly attractive to potential future employers. Moreover, having the name of a world-renown university on your resume enhances it all the more!
Develop Yourself Personally
Although highly rewarding overall, studying abroad can have some very challenging moments, from communicating in a foreign language to navigating different social norms and customs. Learning to overcome these challenges, persevere, and adapt to new situations will make you stronger and more resilient, ready to conquer many more challenges than you were prepared to deal with prior to studying abroad.
